Game Night Favourites

It's game time! Pull out a blank notepad, a pen and your favourite games and we'll have a blasty-blast of an evening together!

I come from a long line of game and card players. My grandparents had many an evening tournament with their friends playing Uno or Tile Rummy eating Grandma's famous "Uno" cake with butterscotch icing.

As a child my parents encouraged us to play games - Snakes & Ladders, Don't Break the Ice, Skip-Bo and Go Fish.

I've had super cheating matches of Uno with my cousins where half the deck ended up under the table somehow and frantic, gotta stand up to play, games of Dutch Blitz as a teenager. I think someone even took a rather hard, albeit accidental, Dutch Blitz elbow to the eye one time!

I've even tried out our local Board Game Cafe where you can play just about any game you can think of and some you've never heard of while snacking on candy and fresh milkshakes. It's good to be an adult!

Sadly, I was never the best at losing. Many times, as a child, my mom or sister had to coax me back to the room after I'd gotten upset over losing or almost losing. ("Come back, Kirsten. We'll let you win.") Life is tough when you're the youngest and everyone else has a few years of knowledge and skill on you.

I've learned from my past and I am always trying to be a better sport, even though I like winning, I mean, come on, who doesn't? I hope I can mostly hold my taunting tongue and play for fun rather than just for the sweet, sweet thrill of the victorious win.

So, in honour of the cooler months coming soon, where we can plan more indoor activities and fun game nights, I've decided to compile a list of some of my all-time favourite games for you to peruse. Who knows, maybe you'll find a new favourite from my list and start your own game night tradition with family or friends.

In no particular order...

All-Time Childhood Favourites (that still stand up and are fun to play)

Dutch Blitz - A super fast-paced, pile 'em up card game where the action never stops till someone calls "Blitz!" Not for the faint of heart, this game will get the blood pumping and the elbows flying. Oh, and the best deck is the yellow "pee" bucket, for real! I especially like the game's instructions, read them aloud for a few honest to goodness belly laughs!

Uno - One of the first card games I learned to play where saving your +4 cards is the best form of vengeance most children are capable of. Some people play with "slips" and sallow the +8 rule! Ask before you play or you might end up with a two-hander batch of cards to get rid of. Oh and remember to say "Uno" when you play that second-to-last card or all your hard work will have come to naught!

Racko - Another awesome childhood game that helps kids learn number order and how to choose wisely. I still love this game! Always start working from low to high, you don't want to have 8 out of 10 cards all sorted in a row and leave that 59 in slot 2!

Phase 10 - A family and friend favourite in my world! It's the game of choice played on trips or winter evenings because it's not fast and everyone is in charge of their own destiny. Well, sort of, until your sister or best friend keeps going "out" on the first or second draw every hand and you're score is already 300+! And no, you don't want a high score. Oh, and watch out for people who play the Skips vindictively...not fun! And those darn 2 sets of 4 catch me every single time.

Scattergories - Name 12 random things that start with the letter G! The room is silent, but for the loud click-click-clicking of the timer clock counting down while you frantically try to thing of 'Something on a beach" that starts with a Y. And here it comes, the dreaded last few seconds when the timer always gives me a slight heart-attack. Then the fun of reading and comparing everyone's answers. The trick is, go unique, always write down your first instinct, then go back and scratch it out for something different that won't be the norm. It's a shame to not get a point because everyone chose Jennifer for a girl's name starting with J! Maybe pick Jenaya or Juniper.

Tile Rummy/Rummykub - This game is a little slower paced and can either be played by the impulsive or the complicated mind. Grouping your number tiles into colour-coordinated runs and sets is easy, but when Grandma tries to re-arrange the entire playing field just to get rid of one little blue 2...arg! She's done it again and won the whole evening. Way to go Grandma! (It's better the make sure she wins.) My family has a strong history with this game and it makes me a little teary to remember all the amazing quality evening spent with my grandparents and relatives.

Grown-Up and Newer Favourites

Speed Scrabble - I'm not sure who first introduced me to this keep-up game of individual Scrabble, but it's been a staple favourite at my house. No need for the board, make your own by constantly rearranging your tiles to use them all then pick another tile and everyone else has to pick up, too! The best is risking it all to scrap your whole crossword-like mess to try and fit all the extras in and maybe getting caught with loads left when someone else picks up the last tile.

Wits & Wagers (Family Edition) - I picked up this game at Costco a while ago for a cheap price and it's been a source of fun when you're not sure what you want to play. Wager and guess the answer, without going over, one many random factoids and questions from: How many windows are in the White House? to What is the weight of the world's largest dog? Are you a good guesser? Then this game might be for you. A great pre-game on Game Night, play a few rounds before you get into the big-name games.

Mille Bornes - This little treasure is my newest obsession! I learned it from an actual French friend years ago and just last week broke open my brand new box of cards that has been sitting on my game shelves for a couple of years. It's a partner game and a race to see who can be the first team to travel 1000 miles amidst car accidents, flat tires, speed traps and more. And don't forget to yell "Coup fourré!" if you've got the right safety or remedy card when the other team sideswipes you. The rounds are semi-fast and even if you don't keep score of all the bonus points, you can keep track of who got to 1000 first!

Anomia - Another of my recent favourites! Quick, name a scientist, then a type of jazz instrument, then a brand of shampoo and don't forget about the rock operas!! This is war with words and categories. You are constantly on the lookout for another card that matches your card's symbol then beat that player at naming something from their card's category. Sounds insane! It can be! Especially when one person wins, the top card is awarded and there is another card to be played right away underneath! Bam, bam, BAM! You'll be surprised at what your brain thinks of in a panicky pinch...or can't think of. Politicians, airlines, mystery authors, anyone?

Ticket to Ride (European Edition) - Oh yes, a large old timey map, colourful routes with train cars and outdated city names no one can pronounce! This is my kind of game! Pick your route cards and stealthily try to get to all your cities by train before someone blocks your path. Watch out, that one friend is going for the huge multi-pointer route in the Netherlands again! Travel from Milan to Paris to Moscova all in one round. The other editions are all fun, as well. Especially when played late at night on your phone or iPad! You can even play the online editions with a friend, it just tends to take a long time to finish.

Monopoly Deal - My last favourite for now. This card version of the classic monopoly real estate game is a faster, more lively round game where no one too likely to scatter the board in frustration and storm off. Mostly because there is no board, there still may be harsh words muttered now and then. It isn't fun to always be shelling out cash for someone's birthday or payday or rent owed, but when you're the one collecting...payback's...awesome!

I hope you enjoyed the short tour of my game shelves.
Yes, I have several shelves packed full with all sorts of other games, too.

So pull out those old cards or board games sometime soon and get the family or kids or your friends around to play a few hands or conquer the world or just laugh a lot and spend some quality time together.

What are your favourite games?

Leave me a comment, let me know you're alive and out there. ;)

Did you know. . . About me?

Did you know....

Here are a few little facts about me and my life.

  1. I now own and use "theretherekitten.com" as my main domain/web address/website?? I finally decided my blog name was never going to change after having it as There There Kitten for so many years already. So my domain is locked in and hopefully unique enough to remember.
  2. My first post was in September of 2006, "Growing Up & Sow's Ears", that's 8 years of blogging! Wow! I started on Blogger before they even had the ability to upload photos! What? Crazy!
  3. This coming September is my 10 year Anniversary at my current job! That's the longest I've ever been committed to something...other than school, because I had no other choice. :) I love my job, my co-workers, my bosses and what I get to do every week! God has carved out this unique little niche for me in the world and I am beginning to really appreciate it every day.
  4. I love board games & card games! (See #15 here) I grew up playing Uno, Skip-Bo, Snakes & Ladders, Go-Fish, War, Trouble, Sorry, Monopoly, Don't Break the Ice, Clue, Mastermind, Connect Four, Phase 10, Pictionary, Dutch Blitz, Racko, Tile Rummy, Scrabble, & Battleship. I've recently added to my game repertoire with awesome games like Ticket to Ride, Anomia, Settlers of Catan, Wits & Wagers, HEADS UP, Up a Bit Down a Bit, Upwords, Dixit, and more. If you ever want to see my face light up like Butchart Gardens at Christmas, just invite me over for a games night!!
  5. I once caught a garter snake and held my Mom ransom until she agreed to get me a dog. The standoff didn't last long and we compromised and I got a brand new budgie bird instead. Yes, I was a mischievous child, a trait that creeps up now and again as a adult.
And there you have it, 5 new-ish facts about me that you may have already known or now you know. And yes, my friends, "knowing is half the battle"!  <--Points if you can tell me the origin of that quote.

Bean Trying New Things

Lovely cup at the White Heather.
I'm a tea drinker at heart.

Orange Pekoe runs in my veins.

I have British roots and have grown up appreciating "Tea Time" around 3 o'clock with a hot, sweet, milky cup of tea to top off the afternoon.

I've been to many Tea Rooms around Victoria, Oak Bay and abroad. I adore their quaint atmospheres, delicate tea sandwiches, fresh scones and Devon cream and having tea with someone I care about.
(The best in Victoria, in my humble but knowledgeable opinion is the White Heather!)

Simply put, I love tea.

But this story is not about tea. It's about my very first ever coffee!

5 Random Facts About Me

It's time for some confessions....

I got this idea from a blog I read called "Love Stitched" by Brittany.

Here are 5 Random Facts About Me:

1. I love my Dad's grilled cheese sandwiches! He makes THE BEST grilled cheese! Perhaps it has something to do with the amount of butter he slaps on both sides and the inside, too!! Yummers!

British Movie Fix

If you like British movies, or Masterpiece Theatre (not the famous Monsterpiece Theatre I remember as a child from Seasme Street) or Jane Austin or if you simply like an interesting story, here are two more movies to seek out.

"My Family and Other Animals" tells the innocent and humourous story set before WW2 of a British family who are sick of the cold rainy summer weather in England and decide to pack up and move to the Greek Island of Corfu for some time.
The sweet and slightly dotty widowed mother goes along with her spoiled children's wishes and the family finds themselves loving the heat and the people and their new surroundings in a villa on Corfu.
The eldest son is a bohemian writer who invites his wild and weird friends to stay. The daughter is a sunbathing, bikini-wearing flirt who has the island boys crawling to sneak a peek at her. The next son is obsessed with hunting and shooting and continuously brings home all manner of game for supper.
The youngest of the family is the enthusiastic, nature-loving 12 year old boy Gerald. He makes himself right at home exploring, collecting animals and bugs to fill his menagerie of a room.
The film is a delightful romp with a strange but lovable family as they enjoy each other and their new home. The movie is based on Gerald Terrell's writings, which is close to the truth as seen through the young boys' eyes.

Another wonderful story is Jane Austin's "Northanger Abbey".
In typical Austin way, this film touches on the subjects of love, money, parental rule vs child desires and much more.
I found the characters engaging and likable and the plot had just enough mystery and turns for you not to know what might happen.
The male lead Henry reminded me of Jude Law and the female lead Catherine of a cuter Kate Beckinsale and both played their roles well.
The story follows a lower-state imaginative young woman who is escorted to Bath in the society of some wealthy family friends. There Catherine meets new people;  a social climbing woman with a slightly creepy brother, and a teasing but genteel young man with an endearing sister who could become an excellent best friend. There is also romance in the air but will the kind-hearted Catherine be able to stand up for what she wants, or will she be too polite to overcome the obstacles thrown in her way?

If you are wondering how  find all these interesting and off-the-beaten-track movies, then wanter over to DVD4U on Fairfield by Thrifty's. They are a small DVD rental store, but they have a huge British section and many wonderful titles to choose from!

Two New Movie Favourites...

I rented two movies this weekend and both were worth a quick mention.

The first was a UK film based on and starring the cast from a play called "History Boys".
A witty, intelligent and fast-banter movie, with a great cast and emotional twists. We follow a handful of senior-level boys from non-privileged backgrounds who are bright enough to study hard and possibly get in to some of the top universities in the UK - notably Oxford and Cambridge. Their public school has devised a schedule with special classes totally geared towards helping them ace their entrance exams and interviews. However, the headmaster is bent on the simple task of getting them in, mostly to improve his school's reputation, while some of the teachers argue that their learning should be more than a fixation on an exam, but more life learning, and lessons they will draw from throughout their lives instead of for one test.

(Although a great film, there is a teensy bit of slightly shocking content...ask me about it if you are concerned.)

The second movie I just fell in love with and I can bravely call it the "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" of 2008 - a movie called, "Charlie Bartlett".
Charlie is a teen from a wealthy family who has been kicked out from dozens of private schools and finally has to try public school. His drugged up, ditsy mother stays home playing tennis with their chauffeur, while Charlie tries to fit in to this new group of drama nuts, drug dealers, and popular jocks. He uses his ingenuity and quickly finds a way to give the students what they need - a listening ear...and a few prescriptions along the way.

I won't ruin the movie for you, because I think you should all give "Charlie Bartlett" a try!!

I will say that the character of Charlie is played brilliantly with the perfect drop of naivety and humbleness that makes us just want to be his friend, too!

Find it. Rent it. And someone, please, find me a copy?

Favourite Childhood Toys?

Earlier today I had another oh-so-lovely-trip to my dentist's office for a few fixer-uppers and as I was laying there, staring at the white ceiling I tried to take my thoughts off the grinding noises and somewhere to a place full of fond memories and fluffy, light images.
What did I see in that half an hour of tension-filled prostration?
I found myself recalling my childhood days and some of my most favourite toys to play with.

Here are a few examples of my old friends:

My Little Pony
- The BEST little girl's toy ever! I still have all of mine stored away for future use either when I have kids or for some really boring rainy day. :) I loved the Sea Ponies for bath time and the baby twin ponies, too!

Barbie - I had a few and the best part was dressing them up, doing their hair and setting up their house and whatever situation we were playing that day. By the time I was done setting up, playtime was usually over. (Thanks for the reminders and memories E!) Tropical Island Miko was my fav, I think it was her really long black hair and cool one shoulder swimsuit.

Cars - HotWheels & MicoMachines!!!! - Sooo much fun! Did you ever have the race tracks that you could put together and loop-de-loop? We did, but I think the racetracks got more use above the fridge..... (wink, wink, nudge, nudge!!) MicroMachines were awesome! And I always wanted more! It was always a bonus to get a helicopter or boat with a set of cars. Oh and the Micro Machines video games was so sweet, too!

Transformers - Though I think I only ever had one real Transformer, I also had one or two Go-bots - all were played with until they almost stopped being able to transform! The TV show rocked, too!!!! I always thought Bumblebee would have made a good buddy in real life.

Pound Puppies
- yes, I have always been a dog lover and these cute stuffed animals were just my cup o' tea! I had one big one and one small one and always watched the Cartoon!

Cabbage Patch Kid - The craze for these round-faced dolls hit when I was about 5 and My mom battled the stores and first found me a lovely light brown haired gal, but after our puppy, Buffy, got a hold of her and chewed her face off (maybe that's why I don't like horror movies??) she found me another dark-haired CPK girl named, Teresa and she even held a crayon in her left had!!! How cool!! I collected tons of clothes, even had some handmade ones given to me. I still have her and her wardrobe packed away somewhere.

Another favourite toy-like item was all my 'book and tape' sets - I had a plethora of Cabbage Patch Kid stories, some Disney (Fox and the Hound!), some Bible stories (Blister the Lamb and Gregory Grub!!) etc etc. I loved these and wish I had held on to them.

Ahhhh, the good old days!
I am SURE I will think of many more favourites as the week progresses.
But please, leave me a comment and tell me what YOUR favourite childhood toys were!!

Favourite Things...

I had a moment and wanted to have a look at some different areas of my favourite things:

Favourite Entertainment ~ Lately I have been adding to my DVD collection with the seasons of "Friends". I simply love this TV show. In my late teens years I grew up with the pals from Friends and now I enjoy reliving all their escapades (not the IceCapades...or any other 'Capade') in my own living room. I am up to Season 6 and will slowly add the rest when I can. "I'll be there for you...."

Another or my favourite things was recently utterly destroyed and I am just sick over it! My brand new cell phone, the newest one in over 3 years for me, my Nokia, has passed on from this life to the cell phone heaven somewhere over the Pacific...*sniff*
No, I did not lose it at sea, but I might as well have. I looked for it last week only to find my dear new phone, with whom I had many adventures, walks and photo shoots, had taken its' last adventure of a thrill ride in the washing machine. Get that? It went through a full laundry wash cycle, soap and everything.
I almost threw up.

And so, after the disappointing news from my local cell phone retailer that yes, indeed my phone would no longer brighten my day with it's huge screen and catchy rings, I reactivated my old phone (bleh) and settled into my long contract with the bleak outlook of no new phone for another 3 years...*sniff*
A favourite thing gone...forever.....

A future favourite thing I have been dreaming about for a loooong time is to purchase a beautiful sectional sofa! I am always searching for one, checking colours, styles, fabrics, looking from afar. I think one would fit in my new little home, I'm willing to try if I ever found a reasonably priced sectional.

Here are a few practical ones and some really cool ones:

I'd like to find one like these first three, in a blue or green...some medium-dark colour and in an 'L' shape.

I love this brown and tan one, but you'd have to have a big open space for it.

WEIRD!!!!
